{"id":12271,"date":"2017-11-10T09:00:38","date_gmt":"2017-11-10T14:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/museumhack.com\/?p=12271"},"modified":"2025-04-21T16:04:30","modified_gmt":"2025-04-21T20:04:30","slug":"minimalist-marketing-asu-get-weird","status":"publish","type":"do_not_index","link":"https:\/\/museumhack.com\/minimalist-marketing-asu-get-weird\/","title":{"rendered":"How Mystery + Minimalist Marketing Led To Massive Event Turnout"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this year, we helped the ASU Art Museum turn their museum into an intimate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/museumhack.com\/escape-room-museum-asu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">escape room<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> centered around engaging with the collection. But for their next event, ASU wanted to go bigger &#8211; and a little weirder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ASU partnered with us once again to engage the community, make their presence known, and show off their personality &#8211; aka they wanted to get a little weird! The goal was to attract around 200 attendees to the museum &#8211; and by the end of the night, nearly double that number walked through the doors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>So how did we do it?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We flew in a Museum Hack dream team &#8211; Dustin, Zak M, Kate, and Casey &#8211; to work with ASU to bring a ton of people to the museum, aiming to achieve the opposite of the small intimate groups we targeted for the museum\u2019s previous escape room events. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12276\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12276\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12276\" src=\"https:\/\/museumhack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/image2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"810\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/museumhack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/image2.png 810w, https:\/\/museumhack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/image2-475x264.png 475w, https:\/\/museumhack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/image2-768x427.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 810px) 100vw, 810px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12276\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Minimalistic promo image for GET WEIRD event<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><b>What was GET WEIRD?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>The goal of the event was to draw a ton of people to the museum and to challenge staff to think creatively about the types of activities that can happen within a gallery space.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When brainstorming for the event, there were so many good ideas that the team decided to work with as many of them as possible. They loosely allowed the common theme of <strong>things you\u2019d never think to do in a gallery<\/strong> (who knew they could be fun spaces, right??). <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Leaving a little to the imagination<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With event content created, one glaring problem remained &#8211; what was the best way to market this to the public? The team decided to embrace the almost indescribable nature of the event, making the marketing, descriptions, and images minimalist, evoking the same feel as an earlier campaign from the museum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fasuartmuseum%2Fvideos%2F1362452063835195%2F&amp;show_text=0&amp;width=560\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why did <strong>minimalist marketing<\/strong> work for this event?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It left people WANTING to find out more. With a dedicated fan base from the insanely popular escape room events, visitors were okay committing to going knowing as little as possible about the event. The event was an open house designed for about 200+ people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost 400 showed up. So we\u2019ll call that a major win. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe definitely brought in a new audience to this museum, I saw recent alums, young families, undergrads, even people with no ASU affiliation&#8230;this brought in everyone.\u201d &#8211; Kate N., Tour Guide SF<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><b>ASU was thrilled to bring in that many people &#8211; but it gave our staff the warm fuzzies too.<\/b><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis was a project where I was saying over and over &#8220;OMG I love my job&#8221;. The creativity and support for the weird on this event was spectacular. It felt like a true collaboration between MH and a client and together we built something memorable and awesome.
