Results from Our First Twitter Poll"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We asked our followers\u2026<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6531\" src=\"https:\/\/museumhack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Poll-Educ-vs-Entertain-on-Twitter.png\" alt=\"While these are absolutely NOT mutually exclusive, do you believe the paramount purpose of your museum is to Educate or Entertain? 87% Educate, 13% Entertain\" width=\"592\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/museumhack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Poll-Educ-vs-Entertain-on-Twitter.png 592w, https:\/\/museumhack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Poll-Educ-vs-Entertain-on-Twitter-475x194.png 475w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 592px) 100vw, 592px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The results are interesting. \u00a0As renegade tour guides, many people view our tours as purely entertainment. \u00a0But they\u2019re not. \u00a0Our tours take an entertainment-first approach &#8212; with a focus on passionate storytelling as a doorway into successfully engaging museum audiences and providing unforgettable educational experiences.<\/p>\n<p>We know that many museum visitors want more than the traditional museum experience. \u00a0In fact, a study entitled \u201cDo Museums Matter?: Key Findings from the Museums R&amp;D Research Collaborative\u201d revealed that only 12% of the general public perceive museums as being educational. \u00a0Other studies have revealed similar findings, such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/colleendilen.com\/2013\/07\/31\/entertainment-vs-education-how-your-audience-really-rates-the-museum-experience-data\/\">IMPACTS data on overall satisfaction<\/a>, which revealed that \u201ceducational experience\u201d was only a minor factor in visitors\u2019 evaluations of cultural organizations, while \u201centertainment experience\u201d counted for one-fifth of their evaluations.<\/p>\n<p>These studies are nearly the opposite of what we found in our Twitter poll. \u00a0But our Twitter audience is largely museum professionals, not visitors. \u00a0So the results hint that while audiences value museums for their entertainment value, the museum professionals who run them focus more on educational value. \u00a0But before we go jumping to this conclusion, let\u2019s take a look at what our followers tweeted in response to our poll:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6532 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/museumhack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Poll-Educ-vs-Entertain-Tom-Mackie.png\" alt=\"@thomasmackie3 response: Perhaps the correct term is inspire.\" width=\"641\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/museumhack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Poll-Educ-vs-Entertain-Tom-Mackie.png 641w, https:\/\/museumhack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Poll-Educ-vs-Entertain-Tom-Mackie-475x176.png 475w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 641px) 100vw, 641px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Tom has an interesting point &#8212; but how do museums become \u201cinspiring\u201d? \u00a0If the main goal of a museum is to inspire &#8212; that is, to make their audience feel something, especially the urge to do something &#8212; then it might be highly dependent on context, interaction, and personal relevance.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6533\" src=\"https:\/\/museumhack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Poll-Educ-vs-Entertain-Steve-Bukowski.png\" alt=\"@steveRbu response: Museums, realistically, need to be able to do both. If museums wish to draw in new audiences, how do they meet the needs of those audiences without sacrificing their mission?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6535\" src=\"https:\/\/museumhack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Poll-Educ-vs-Entertain-Admiralty-House.png\" alt=\"@AdmiraltyMuseum response: Excellent question and a never ending debate\" width=\"643\" height=\"254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/museumhack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Poll-Educ-vs-Entertain-Admiralty-House.png 643w, https:\/\/museumhack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Poll-Educ-vs-Entertain-Admiralty-House-475x188.png 475w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 643px) 100vw, 643px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We think museums can &#8212; and should &#8212; be both. \u00a0Entertainment can act as a powerful gateway to education, and with much of today\u2019s audiences, it might just be the best way. \u00a0Even for the visitors who come to the museum to learn first, they only become <i>further<\/i> engaged when their visit also proves to be really, really fun. \u00a0The opposite is also true: visitors who come seeking entertainment may find themselves learning a lot more than they expected. \u00a0And who knows what doorways that will open&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Whatever the primary focus of your institution, we\u2019ve found a two-prong way to balance education with entertainment while inspiring visitors: \u00a0incredible storytelling and participatory meaning creation. \u00a0Great storytellers have the ability to blend fact and entertainment in ways that are both personally relevant <i>and<\/i> universal to the human experience. \u00a0They can connect our modern world with that of people and things that existed hundreds or even thousands of years ago.<\/p>\n<p>By setting up contexts that invite visitors to actively participate in the creation of the meaning of their experience (e.g. kinesthetic photo challenges, interactive games, short-form group activities), we shy away from a unidirectional exchange of information. \u00a0Instead, we provide our guests with entertaining pathways to become doers, meaning makers, and &#8212; perhaps most importantly &#8212; learners.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6536\" src=\"https:\/\/museumhack.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Poll-Educ-vs-Entertain-Dustin.png\" alt=\"@DustinGrowick: Museums!
